Altitudinal distribution: montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)

Note: a species with a bluish-grey thallus bearing irregular soralia, containing perlatolic acid, always sterile in Europe, but apothecia known from Western North American material; on the acidic smooth bark of deciduous trees, rarely on conifers; widespread in Europe and more common in the West, with only a few records from the montane belt of the Alps.
