Substrate: intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists), siliceous rocks
Altitudinal range: from the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: in niches and fissures of humid calcareous schists and granodiorite, usually along rivers or by lakeshores, often occurring together with cyanobacterial lichens, usually above treeline; known from Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, the Alps and the Pyrenees, and from Colorado in North America.
