Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: according to Roux et coll. (2014) most samples of Heterodermia obscurata from Europe do actually belong to this species, which differs in chemical characters and in having a white, yellow-orange-spotted lower surface (whereas the lower surface of H. obscurata is yellow-orange throughout).
