Substrate: siliceous rocks, bark

Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)

Note: a species resembling H. afrorevoluta in the coarse soredia developing from pustules, but soredia blue-black and easily eroding, lower surface dull and therefore similar to H. revoluta; on both rocks and bark, usually near the coast; widespread in Western Europe, with a few records from the Swiss Alps.
