Substrate: plant debris, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), lignum

Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: a species with a thallus resembling the primary thallus of a Cladonia, the grey to greenish squamules with usually lip-shaped soralia, mostly sterile; on plant debris and rotting wood; widespread worldwide, in Central Europe in montane forests, in the Alps still overlooked in some regions.
