Altitudinal distribution: submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a variety with contiguous squamules which are larger than in subsp. tristis, a bright green epithecium, and simple ascospores; more or less confined to steep faces of calciferous rocks; widespread in the eastern Mediterranean region, the terricolous record from the Western Alps (France) needs confirmation.
