Altitudinal distribution: subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a species resembling the Mediterranean Rh. epispilum, but thallus grey and ascospores somewhat smaller; obligately parasitic on Rimularia gibbosa on siliceous boulders at high elevations; only known from the Eastern Alps (Austria).
