Altitudinal distribution: subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a relatively rare species and the only terricolous one in the genus; optimum on basic sandy soil, from where it may spread over decaying mosses and plant remains, mostly near treeline.
