Substrate: calciferous rocks

Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: the 1-septate spores and the pruinose thallus with somewhat stouter, more or less flat, minute squamules, different marginal lobes, and the less developed prothallus distinguish this species from P. nigrum. The taxonomic value of these characters needs however further study.
