Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: a calcicolous species resembling V. eusebii (syn. V. amylacea Hepp), with a very thin thallus indicated by bluish patches, and medium-sized perithecia with a dimidiate involucrellum; widespread in the mountains of Europe (Alps, Carpathians, Pyrenees), with a few scattered records from the Alps.
