Altitudinal distribution: montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: closely related to V. macrostoma, but differing in the thinner thallus, smaller perithecia, and smaller spores; known from a few localities only (Italy, Austria, Germany and Russia), but probably more widespread, having been often subsumed under V. macrostoma and V. nigrescens.
