Altitudinal distribution: montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a variety with reddish-brown to blackish apothecial discs, and sessile pycnidia often containing allantoid, up to 3-septate macroconidia; on wood or acid bark, widespread in Western Europe but not common; in the Alps so far only known from Switzerland.
