Verrucaria maculiformis Kremp. nom.illeg. non Hoffm.

Lichenised.
Substrate: calciferous rocks
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: this species seems to be most frequent in Western and Central Europe, on more or less calcareous pebbles or on bricks, especially in rather shaded situations. Most records require confirmation. The name is not legitimate, being a later homonym of V. maculiformis Hoffm. (1796).
