Substrate: lignum, bark

Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)

Note: a circumboreal-montane species found on hard rotting wood, e.g. on poles and fences, more rarely on Larix and Pinus cembra in the subalpine belt; certainly more widespread in the Alps, especially in subcontinental areas, but overlooked, being mostly sterile. This is one of the few calicioid fungi that reproduce via lichenised diaspores.
