Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a southern species, known from Europe and North America, found on acidic rocks and exposed roots in dry underhangs, also on dry undersides of trees in sheltered, humid situations, such as in forests; from the Alps there are a few scattered records only.
