Altitudinal distribution: alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: a circum-arctic-alpine species found on soil and plant debris, with a squamulose, olive to brownish-black thallus, a chroococcoid photobiont, ascomata with a peridium pigmented mainly in the intercellular spaces, cylindrical fissitunicate asci, and 1-septate ascospores; known from two localites only in the Alps.
