Altitudinal distribution: alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: on horizontal to moderately inclined surfaces of siliceous rocks lying on or near the ground in scree fields, mostly in upland areas; for a long time treated as a sorediate morph of P. flavicunda; some records are likely hidden under those of that species.
