Interactive Identification Key for Marine Organisms of the Gulf of Trieste Nataša Dolenc Orbanić, Claudio Battelli, Janja Plazar, Petra Furlan, Nastja Cotič AA.VV. The Gulf of Trieste lies in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea and occupies an area of approximately 550 km2. It is a relatively shallow bay, as its average depth is 16.4 m, the deepest point reaches 37 m only. The sea temperature varies from 6 °C in winter to 28 °C in summer. The tides in the Gulf of Trieste are the largest in the Adriatic Sea, the greatest difference between high and low tide can reach more than 180 cm. The average salinity is 37–38 ‰. Several animal and plant species find their refuges along the coasts. For exploring the biodiversity of the Gulf of Trieste you can use this interactive key, which includes 100 among the most common marine coastal organisms. The key was designed for amateurs and beginners who want to discover sea life. With its aid you can learn about marine organisms and their adaptations to life in the sea and discover interesting facts about each species. This identification tool was created in collaboration between the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste (Italy), the University of Primorska, the Faculty of Education and the National Education Institute (Slovenia), in the framework of Project SiiT (School-oriented Interactive Identification Tools: exploring biodiversity in a cross-border area) within the Programme of Cross-border Cooperation Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and by national funds.
