Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: all European collections are from Northern Sweden, apart from some specimens found in Wallis, Switzerland, and in France (Alps of Haute-Provence). Several specimens identified as C. furfuracea from other regions in Europe (Norway, Austria, Turkey and Croatia) were found to belong to C. herbidella.
