Substrate: living mosses, bark, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata)
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a forest floor species occurring amongst and over mosses, more rarely on rock or on bark, on basal parts of old trees, with optimum in the montane belt; widespread throughout the Alps, but not distinguished from similar species in the older literature.
