Confused with P. ×hortorum L.H.Bailey: Miller (1996) regards all the forms attributed to P. inquinans in Europe are effectively referable to P. ×hortorum, since the absence of the leaf coloured band regularly appears also in the heterozygous gene pool. The true P. inquinans can be solely distinguished on the basis of the abundant glands, staining even hands and herbarium sheets of rust color, on stems, petioles and peduncles.
