VEGETATIVE FEATURES top

Thallus habit:  tufts of ramified fronds, attached by a basal crustose disc, not evident because of entangled stolons (A). Size: up to 7-12 (20)cm high. Branches: lying on one plane (B). Branching: main axes dichotomous, lateral branches simple to pinnate (B). Intergenicula: compressed, with centre ridge, becoming wider on upper parts of branches and rarely producing adventitious branchlets: 0.1-1.0mm long, 0.6-1.0mm in diameter. Genicula: 110-240µm long, 240-300µm long. Colour of living specimen: red violet. Colour of dried specimen: white to yellow ivory.

Medulla: cells 90-120µm long. Cortex: cells 10-17µm long. Epithallial cells: rounded, 6-10µm in diameter (C). Cell connections: cell fusions. Other features: trichocytes J-type.

Gametangial conceptacles: spermatangial conceptacles are rare, outside diameter not recorded; carposporangial conceptacles, 150µm in diameter x 180µm high. Tetra/bisporangial conceptacles: pedunculate, fusiform, corniculate (D); 420-750µm in diameter outside. Phenology: ---
