Symposium in memory of Livio Poldini - Modern biogeography. Studying and classifying plant ranges and communities (I part)
Symposium summary: A modern approach to biogeography is based on the solid foundations of classical phytogeographical studies. In this sense, the contribution of Professor Livio Poldini (1930-2024) to the understanding of the biogeography of plants in north-eastern Italy and surrounding areas has been pivotal. This symposium welcomes contributions dealing with modern approaches to biogeography, from the classification of plant communities to the understanding of macroecological
phenomena, including the use of new technologies and approaches.

14:30 - 16:00 Forest communities: from management to conservation
Symposium summary: Almost one third of the world's land area is covered by forests. Most temperate forests are managed, which leads to significant conservation problems. There is an urgent need to find sustainable solutions to maintain forest productivity while improving biodiversity, functionality and resilience of forests to climate crises. The symposium welcomes contributions on forest ecology in a comprehensive approach, including studies on forest management and conservation.
Symposium keywords: Agrobiodiversity; Bioindicators; Climate change; Community ecology; Cultural heritage; Diversity in reproductive strategies; Functional traits; Fungi; Plants and environment; Taxonomy; biodiversity–ecosystem functioning.
16.00-16.30 Coffee break
16.30-18.00 Mutualism and competition in a changing world
Symposium summary: Global changes often cause dramatic disruptions in the interactions and networks between plants and other photosynthetic and heterotrophic organisms. This symposium will focus on new frontiers in the study of the mutualistic relationship and competition, promoting novel and interdisciplinary approaches for a better understanding of the mismatches triggered by global change.
Symposium keywords: Algae; Bioactivities; Biotechnologies; Bryophytes; Diversity in reproductive strategies; Functional and integrative biology; Fungi; Lichens; Vascular plants; Plant-Animal interactions; Pollination.
14:30 - 16:00 Botanic collections in the 21st century
Symposium summary: The role of botanical collections, which was primarily important for taxonomic research, is now expanding, thanks to the digital provision of specimen , and the possibility of molecular analysis of specimens. This symposium will accept contributions ranging from the changing role of collections in research, to new approaches to the management and conservation of collections, to the application of new technologies for digitization and the extraction of metadata and morphometric parameters from the specimens.
Symposium keywords: Archaeobotany; Artificial Intelligence; Biodiversity informatics; Botanical gardens; Digitization; Floristics; Molecular analysis; Museology; Palynology; Plant conservation; Research in Botanical Gardens; Species distribution modeling.
16.00-16.30 Coffee break
16:30 - 18:00 Overcoming discipline barriers: Art and plant science
Symposium summary: Plants have always been the subject of artistic representations, as well as a problem for the preservation of cultural heritage The relationship between art and botany is therefore anything but simple. This symposium welcomes all contributions that address some of these issues.
Symposium keywords: Art; Architecture; Biodeterioration; Bioprotection; Climate change; Cultural heritage; Functional traits.
AperiWorkshop!
A new format, in which 4 early career researchers present a collaborative research project that they are willing to carry out with other researchers from the national and international botanical community. The speakers will be selected by means of a tender published together with the call for abstracts of the Conference, and will be chosen by the scientific committee. During the event, the discussion will be moderated by members of the scientific
committee.
Format: Ten minutes presentation per project, and free discussion.
Drinks are not for free… :-D
20:30 - 22:30 Public event (in Italian)
Venue: Teatro Verdi, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 2A
Piante, confine tra terra e cielo: Impatto dei cambiamenti climatici ai limiti della vita.

Plants overcoming barriers: native and alien plants facing global changes
Symposium summary: Global changes lead to rapid shifts in the functional spectrum and distribution ranges of plants and thus to novel interactions between environment and biota. This symposium explores the effects of climate and land-use change on alien and native species at different ecological levels, from individual plasticity to the ecosystem level.
Symposium keywords: Climate change; Biological invasions; Diversity in reproductive strategies; Ecosystems and communities; Functional traits; Life strategies; Specialized metabolites; Systematics; Taxonomy.
13:00 - 14:30 Lunch break
14:30 - 16:30 Plenary session
Cell biology and specialized metabolites
Symposium summary: New achievements in biotechnology and functional and integrative biology are particularly important in a changing world, where the functional responsiveness of plants to environmental stresses is seriously challenged. The symposium welcomes cutting-edge studies on cell biology, specialized metabolites, phytochemistry, and molecular biology applied to plants and other photosynthetic organisms of natural or productive interest. Phenotypic plasticity/variability and trait-based approaches will also be considered.

Photoautotrophs under shifting water regimens; what’s new?
Symposium summary: Water stress is of central importance for organisms and communities. Climate change is rapidly altering water regimes by changing precipitation patterns (e.g. increasing droughts and floods) and the interface between inland and marine areas (e.g. effects of sea level rise). Contributions addressing the response of species and communities to current and future scenarios of changing water regimes are welcome.
Symposium keywords: Algae; Applied symbiotic interactions; Bryophytes; Diversity in reproductive strategies; Functional traits; Lichens; Life strategies; Specialized metabolites; Vascular plants.

14:30 - 16:30 Plenary session
Overcoming barriers and borders in plant monitoring, conservation, and ecological restoration
Symposium summary: The European nature conservation networks and the new Nature Restoration Act call for international protection, monitoring and restoration efforts. Against this background, the symposium aims to shed new light on the potential of co-operation projects and actions aimed at overcoming barriers in nature conservation and restoration strategies, with a particular (but not exclusive) focus on Italian, Austrian and Slovenian territories.
